What is a Capsule Wardrobe?

Capsule wardrobe is a term coined by Susie Faux, the owner of a London boutique called “Wardrobe” in the 1970s. According to Faux, a capsule wardrobe is a collection of a few essential items of clothing that don’t go out of fashion, such as skirts, trousers, and coats, which can then be augmented with seasonal pieces.

With a Capsule Wardrobe you want to rid your closet of all the items you don’t like, that don’t fit, that are of poor quality and items that don’t go with the pieces you decided to keep. You want all your items to mix and match. This makes getting dressed in the morning that much easier, not to mention the fact that your closet will be more organized.

Today I have used 10 basic pieces to create a month’s worth of outfits. First let’s look at the items I chose……

Tops

Since it is Summer I decided to create a capsule wardrobe appropriate for the warm weather. I started with three basic tank tops that everyone should have in their closet – white muscle tank, striped tank, black cami.

Bottoms

With the bottoms I chose two that were warm weather appropriate and combined them with a pair of jeans that will get me through the entire year – army green skirt, black high-rise shorts, skinny jeans.

Shoes

For the shoes I went with basic black as I will be able to wear these with all the other pieces in my Summer Capsule Wardrobe, as well as most of the items in my current wardrobe.

Jackets

With a capsule wardrobe it’s important to have a couple of quality over-pieces – whether it be jackets, cardigans, blazers, etc.

Dress

For my last piece I went with a denim jumper because of its versatility. The dress is meant to be worn with a top underneath which means you can create a number of different looks depending on what you pair it with. It’s also a classic piece that I can wear all year round.

Now……let’s have a look at the outfits I created with these pieces……

Outfits 1 – 9

With the jeans I was able to create 9 different outfits simply by changing out the tank and adding a jacket. My favourite outfit of these is definitely the last one – jeans, striped tank, blazer.

Outfits 10 – 18

By now you can probably see a pattern. I was able to create 9 different outfits with each of my three bottoms. Once you get into the habit of working with a capsule wardrobe your outfit possibilities are endless. My favourite outfit out of these is the first one – white tank, shorts.

Outfits 19 – 27

Here again we have 9 different outfit possibilities. With a Capsule Wardrobe it’s a good idea to stick to neutral colors – white, black, grey, denim – and add it a pop of color here and there. That’s what I have done with the army green skirt. It’s still considered a neutral color when it comes to fashion as it goes with almost everything, but it doesn’t come across as a neutral. If that makes sense….

Outfits 28 – 36

Lastly we have the denim jumper. I wasn’t sure if I would be able to create as many outfits with this piece but it worked out beautifully. I was able to follow the same structure here and create 9 more outfit possibilities.

Frank And Oak Summer Capsule Wardrobe – Final Thoughts

I have to be honest, my Frank And Oak Style Plan Summer Capsule Wardrobe turned out even better than I expected. When I first started picking out the items my idea was to use 10 pieces to create 10 outfits. In the end I was able to create a total of 36 outfits which means you have a month’s worth of style options (and then some) in one small little stack of clothes. Capsule Wardrobes aren’t for everyone but I happen to be a huge fan. I love the simplicity, not to mention the money I am saving and the extra closet space it creates.

So……my advice to you…..clean out your closet, sign up for Frank And Oak Style Plan and start creating your own capsule wardrobe. Use your monthly Frank And Oak Style Plan delivery to create your base wardrobe and add to it each month. You will thank me for it later.

XOXO
