Here’s a closer look at the box theme and the items I received this month….

October Theme – Haunted Harvest

Included in every Bokksu box is a detailed cultural guide magazine noting each item, the place of origin, and any common allergens!

Organic Hojicha Tea

This month’s tea pairing is the Organic Hojicha Tea manufactured by Bokksu themselves! This is the perfect autumn tea choice in my opinion. It has a lower caffeine content and an earthy roasted flavor that pairs well with nearly all the snacks this month. I like to brew this in the morning to sip along with my choice picks: the Kocha Black Tea Donut or the Kabocha Pumpkin Red Bean Anpan. Subscribers will receive 3 tea bags this month to pair with their snacks!

Kocha Black Tea Donut

This cake style donut comes infused with bits of black tea leaves, which gives off a light semi-sweet Royal Milk Tea flavor.

Tsukisamu Anpan – Kabocha Pumpkin Red Bean

Kabocha, or Japanese pumpkin, is the star ingredient in this “anpan” snack. Anpan is a sweet bread roll that usually comes filled with a type of bean. In this case, the center was filled with a white bean and pumpkin paste mixture for a sweet and fall-inspired snack.

Kurumi Walnut Mochi

I love all types of mochi and this month comes with two unique walnut kinds. The first one is a squishy mochi that lightly coated with sugar crystals. It supposedly has notes of soy sauce in it, but I was unable to detect it. Overall, it was sweet and chewy!

Kinako Kurumi Walnut Mochi

Next up is the Kinako Kurumi Walnut Mochi, which is lightly dusted in kinako (soybean) powder. The nuttiness of the kinako powder really compliments the sweet mochi. Plus, this one contains mini pieces of walnuts inside!

Funwari Meijin Mochi Puffs – Annou Imo Sweet Potato

These mochi puffs are light as air and literally melt in your mouth! They’re coated in sweet brown sugar with a hint of sweet potato making it a delicious snack perfect for fall.

Satsuma Precious Chips – Salt + Brown Sugar Flavor

The Satsuma Precious Chips are hands-down my favorite snack in the box! These are extra crunchy, thickly cut sweet potato chips. The salt and brown sugar flavoring brings out the sweet potato’s natural sweetness and enhances the flavors. Now, if only these came in a bigger bag!

Sanrio Characters – Halloween Cookie Assortment

Bokksu included a mini assortment of Halloween cookies in adorable Sanrio packaging! These come in two flavors: Chocolate and Vanilla Pudding. Each has a creamy filling that’s sure to satisfy any sweet tooth.

Puchi Pure Gummy – Halloween Assortment Pack

I’ve had these Pure gummies before and I’m a big fan. Subscribers should receive the Puchi Pure Gummy packs in orange and grape flavors, but I think I accidentally received two grape packs. I don’t mind though, since these sugar-coated gummies are delicious. Plus, they come in cute heart shapes!

Butter Corn Rice Cracker

This miniature rice cracker features a savory Butter Corn flavor. Despite the small size, it packs a big crunch. The simple and tasty flavor makes it easy to enjoy and there’s 3 included in the box!

Kinoko No Manma Eringi Mushroom Chips – Butter + Soy Sauce Flavor

Has anyone ever heard of mushroom chips before?! These blew my mind at how unique and full of flavor they were. They are made by slicing King Oyster Mushrooms and seasoned with butter and soy sauce. Because of the light texture and rich umami flavors, these were gone in seconds!

Danran Okaki Rice Cracker – Uni

This huge round rice cracker is made of 100% domestically grown Japanese rice and is fried to achieve the big crunch and buttery flavor. The crackers are also drizzled with an uni (sea urchin) flavored sauce.

Kakimochi Mochi Rice Crackers – Kobukaki

The Kakimochi Mochi Rice Cracker is a savory, crunchy cracker with dry seaweed flakes baked right into the snack. It’s filled with a tasty umami flavor.

Otona No Otsumami Crunch – Ebi + Black Pepper

This mini pack of rice crackers comes in a unique flavor mixture of black pepper and classic ebi (shrimp). This snack also includes peanuts for added crunch!

Men Zakuzaku Ramen Sticks – Gyutan + Salt Flavor

I’m obsessed with all types of ramen, and ramen-inspired snacks are right up my alley! The first snack is the Men Zakuzaku Ramen Sticks which are wheat noodles fried in rice oil. The black pepper and salt flavor combine together perfectly to create a great savory snack!

Baby Star Ramen Sticks

The second ramen snack this month is the Baby Star Ramen Sticks. These have the thinner noodle texture which give off a very satisfying crunch. It’s hard not to pour the entire bag into your mouth all at once!

Onigiri Senbei – Halloween Soy Sauce Flavor

How cute is this Halloween packaging?! These Onigiri Senbei rice crackers come in a tasty shoyu (soy sauce) flavor. There’s two large rice crackers in each package and they come seasoned with flecks of nori (seaweed)!

Bokksu Review October 2019 – Final Thoughts

This is my first month reviewing Bokksu and I’m very impressed. Unlike other Japanese snack boxes out there, Bokksu has a main focus on delivering snacks from local Japanese makers. That way, you get to experience a more “authentic” taste of Japan. A lot of these snacks are from all different prefectures and they’re snacks I’ve never tasted before! One thing to note is that this box was rice crackers galore! I’m not surprised though since rice is the foundation of Japan diets, and Bokksu does a fantastic job including a unique variety of flavors. Another thing I enjoyed is there’s multiples of several snacks – this is great to share with others!
