December Theme

Each box includes up to 6 science and art kits packaged inside of bags made with 100% recycled materials. This month’s theme is Arctic Science. Create, play, and learn with the Green Kid magazine. Inside of the magazine you will find information about the Arctic and fun activities for your child to do!

Arctic Crafts: Hare and Fox Window Clings

In the first activity bundle your child will get to make their very own window clings! The best part is you only need a few materials, including: glue, puffy paint, a clear plastic bag, and a template to trace. Green Kid Crafts has included a template with a hare and a fox which your child will outline with puffy paint then fill with glue. Once that is complete, you just add the face and let it dry! After 12-24 hours you will have two amazing new window clings to give your home that arctic feel.

Arctic Crafts: Beaded Snowflake

Next up, your child will make a beaded snowflake using pipe cleaners and assorted beads. This activity is fairly simple and can be done with little to no help from an adult. My kids really love stringing beads so this project was something they really enjoyed! It’s also perfect for the holidays and can be hung as decoration or an ornament using the recycled paper ribbon included in the activity packet.

Colors Of The Arctic: Northern Lights Postcards

In this next activity, your child will create an Arctic nightscape postcard using wax-resist technique. Your child will explore their creativity by designing their own version of the northern lights onto a postcard paper then they can add stars using a white crayon which will appear after you paint over your creation using the watercolor paints. This is because the wax in the crayons is waterproof, protecting those colored areas from paint.

Colors Of The Arctic: Watercolor Snowflake

We all know the Arctic is cold so it’s only fitting to have your child create a snowflake! This activity can get a little messy with the watercolors but it’s so much fun and your child will love it. You will have to fold the coffee filter in half twice and then cut small shapes along the folded sides which will create a design once opened. You may need to assist with this depending on your child’s age and ability to use scissors. We have been practicing using scissors with our two preschoolers so this activity was a great learning experience for them. Now your child can paint their snowflake freely, mixing colors to make it their own!

Arctic Science and Games: Blubber Experiment

Will a layer of fake blubber help keep you from getting cold? Find out how arctic animals keep warm in cold temperatures with this experiment. Fill a bowl with ice water then take the vaseline packet included and squeeze it into one of the clear baggies. Have your child put their finger inside of the baggie with the vaseline and one that is empty then place it inside of the ice water and see which one gets colder faster. The vaseline acts as blubber in this experiment, the layer of fat that arctic animals have, which keeps your finger from getting cold when placed inside of the cold water. This activity is very easy to do and easy to explain to your child because of all the great information Green Kid Crafts includes in the instruction booklet.

Arctic Science and Games: Arctic Games

The last activity includes a list of games your child can play that are Arctic inspired, such as blizzard ball, seal race, and snowman launch. This activity includes a total of five games. All of the games have little instruction and not many game pieces involved making them easy for small children to play along and enjoy. My 5 year old’s favorite game is the snowball races and lucky for him he’s able to play it over and over again!

Bobo’s Mini Coconut

This month, Green Kid Crafts included a special little surprise for your child to munch on after having all that fun playing with their Arctic projects. This yummy little coconut snack is from Bobo’s. It is gluten free, vegan, and non-GMO which is a great option for small snacks.

Mama, Do You Love Me?

I am obsessing over this month’s book, “Mama, Do You Love Me?”. The story takes place in an Arctic setting which is fitting for the monthly theme. The illustrations inside of the book are breathtaking and tell the story so well. This book will introduce your child to a different culture which they will get the chance to explore more using the glossary in the back of the book. It talks about the unconditional love of a mother and how no matter what her child does or where she may go, she will always love her.

Green Kid Crafts December 2018 Review – Final Thoughts

Finishing off the year with a box filled with color and creativity! The December Green Kid Crafts box had the perfect theme for the winter season. I personally love all the amazing activities they included and with this subscription I feel like my children are learning new material and they really enjoy it. They are constantly including bonus activities, whether they are inside of the magazine or within the individual activities, such as the Arctic games set, so you are sure to get your money’s worth.
