RawSpiceBar Review November 2016

Why is it that I get so excited about spices? I mean, there’s not really anything to them. And there’s not really a lot to my RawSpiceBar subscription. It’s about as straightforward as they come. We receive 3 little packets of spice and that’s it. There’s no bling, no fancy packaging, no crazy value……etc. Maybe that’s why I like it? There’s something to be said about simplicity.

November Theme

This month’s RawSpiceBar package is titled “The Pondicherry Kit”.

Vaarungal (“Welcome” in Tamil)! You’ve landed in Pondicherry! The weather is warm and the costal breeze is refreshing but a Chai tea won’t hurt. The Romans, the Chinese, the Dutch, the English, and the French have all been here and their influences remain present. Namely the French. Warm Vadouvan odors collide with buttery smells wafting from kitchens in the French Quarter. With colonization, architectural and cuisine changed; However, the complex layers of Indian spices shine through each French inspired dish.

I see some sort of pumpkin spice in the mix so I already know I am going to love this month’s spice lineup. We received pumpkin spice last year and I was really hoping to receive it again this year.

Peppercorn Chai

Toasted black peppercorns, ginger, cinnamon, green cardamom, cloves, nutmeg, star anise, spices.

So, I made a big mistake when filming my YouTube video. I didn’t realize that they included two recipes for each spice this month – one on each side of the card. Did they do that last month? Anyways, on one side of the card there’s a recipe for Chai Spiced Apple Clafoutis and on the other there is one for Masala Chai. I’m quite excited about the chai, I am going to skip the regular milk and make it with soy or coconut milk instead.

Indo-French Vadouvan

Toasted cumin, toasted coriander, turmeric, fenugreek, yellow mustard seeds, brown mustard seeds, green cardamom, aleppo pepper, cayenne, nutmeg, cloves, spices.

This is a really interesting mixture of spices. I don’t think I have ever used something like this. On one side of the card there’s a recipe for Vadouvan Scrambled Eggs and on the other side there’s one for Vadouvan Leek & Butternut Squash Soup. I will definitely be making the soup.

Unpumpkin Pie Spice

Ginger, allspice, cinnamon, nutmeg, black peppercorns, star anise, spices.

Yay! Last but not least we have the Unpumpkin Pie Spice! It’s not your regular pumpkin pie spice though, it includes peppercorn and anise. The recipes we received to go with it are Baked Pumpkin Donuts and Pumpkin Spiced Cornbread. However, I found one on their website for Vegan Unpumpkin Pie Pancakes so I am going to give those a try.

RawSpiceBar Review November 2016 – Final Thoughts

I am loving this month’s selections. They have a Fall feel to them, and will allow me to make some warm, delicious treats – Chai Latte, Butternut Squash Soup and Pumpkin Pancakes. I’m tempted to say this is one of my favourite packages from RawSpiceBar. Can I also say how fun the Unpumpkin Pie Spice is! Such a fun little twist on a seasonal favourite. Now, if only I could find the time to park my butt in the kitchen for an entire day…..or two. That would be heaven.

XOXO
