Here’s a closer look at our January spices…….

January Theme – Ghana

Do you have travel plans for this year to explore vibrant cities or astonishing nature? Your first dinner stop-over in 2018 with SpiceBreeze will be Ghana. Here’s a closer look at the menu……

Peanut Butter Soup “Nkatenkwan”

This Ghanaian dish, called Nkatenkwan, is typically made with okra and peanut butter. If these ingredients don’t appeal to you, use other vegetables and/ or make it a clear soup. Meat can be added optionally.

The Grains of the Paradise: The spice kit includes grains of paradise. They are native to West Africa, mainly from Ghana, and a mild but pungent alternative to black pepper.

The Nkatenkwan Culinary Spice Kit includes the following spices:

  1. Rosemary, bay leaves
  2. Grains of paradise

Any recipe containing peanut butter is a recipe I know I will love. This particular recipe calls for chicken but after reading the recipe card I know I could easily substitute tofu for the chicken.

Beans & Rice from Ghana called “Waakye”

Waakye, a Ghanaian dish with beans & rice is a meal of itself or the center of a large number of side dishes. It’s very popular all over Ghana. The name derives from waakye leaves that are typically used to turn the color of the dish to reddish-brown. Baking soda has the same effect. Try this basic dish with side dishes of your choice.

The Grains of the Paradise: The spice kit includes grains of paradise. They are native to West Africa, mainly from Ghana, and a mild but pungent alternative to black pepper.

The Waakye Culinary Spice Kit includes the following spices:

  1. Smoked paprika, thyme, bay leaves
  2. Grains of paradise

I’ve made a recipe similar to this before and actually really loved it. It’s vegan-friendly and easy to make. Roast some of your favorite vegetables and you have an entire meal.

Dukkah Lamb

Dukkah is an Egyption mixture of spices and nuts, usually sesame and hazelnuts. The ingredients are toasted to develop a more intensive flavor. It can be combined with other nuts, e.g. pistachios or almonds, and herbs, e.g. rosemary or oregano.

Dukkah Culinary Spice Kit includes the following spices:

  1. Sesame, toasted, organic
  2. Toasted coriander, toasted cumin

I am a HUGE fan of Dukkah. I discovered it a couple years ago and fell in love with the flavour instantly. I like to make a little oil mixture with the two spices and add it to avocado toast…….it’s even better with a little lemon zest.

Nasi Goreng

Nasi Goreng is the second most delicious meals of the world. It is originally a dish to use up leftovers and its best cooked with rice from the day before. You can be creative with the choice of vegetables and add optional meat or shrimp. Earthy galangal makes the taste of this dish outstanding.

Nasi Goreng Culinary Spice Kit includes the following spices:

  1. Galangal, turmeric, black pepper, nutmeg, anchor, tamarind
  2. Chili

This recipe sounds really good. I love that it was originally a dish to use up leftovers, such a great idea. It calls for shrimp but the recipe card says you can substitute with tempeh.

SpiceBreeze Review January 2018 – Final Thoughts

Do you know someone who loves to spend time in the kitchen? Or maybe that someone is you? Then SpiceBreeze would make the perfect gift. We have been reviewing this subscription since August and both Shonah and I are impressed. SpiceBreeze is consistent, organized and reasonably priced. I love that we receive new recipes in each delivery and that the recipes provide suggestions for veggie-friendly dishes. This month I am most excited about the Dukkah. I highly recommend the oil mixture I mentioned above. It’s great with bread or as a topping for your avocado toast.

Stuck in a recipe rut? SpiceBreeze can help you with that…….trust me, I speak from experience.

XOXO
