Tribe Beauty Box Review August 2018
Tribe Beauty Box is a beauty subscription box that sends 5 full size beauty products from trendy and indie brands every other month. The box is targeted towards MUAs (make-up artists), and sends staple and trendy products needed in each beauty kit. They kindly sent me this box for review.
The Cost: US $34.99 + shipping ($4.95 US, $6.99 Canada, international varies) + taxes in Canada
Ships to: Canada, US, UK, internationally
Good to Know: You can skip a month if you email them at [email protected] by the day of the first spoiler, 5PM Eastern Time.
Everything comes packed in a pink cardboard box.
Inside you will find a card and all the products nestled within pink starch packing peanuts. I love this attention to detail – the box and the peanuts match in color.
August theme is “Summer Never Ends”. This month I’ve received three brushes, three single eyeshadows and three more full-size products.
NARS Velvet Lip Glide in La Main Bleue
This was the only variation in the box this month, and subscribers received either this NARS Velvet Lip Glide or the Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy Lip Color. Colors varied. I literally squealed from joy when I saw that I received the NARS lippie. I wanted to try their velvet lip glides for a long time, but never bought one, and this deep magenta/ lighter plum color is gorgeous. It’s a bit out of my comfort zone, since I rarely go for purple lippies, but it looks nice as a transitional color from summer to fall, it is very comfortable and has a high-shine finish that I prefer over matte lipsticks. I’d describe it best as a highly pigmented, non-sticky lip gloss.
Value: $26 USD
Here I’m wearing the lipstick.
Makeup Geek Signature Eyeshadows in Shimma Shimma, Peach Smoothie and Aphrodite
If you subscribe to beauty boxes, you may want to invest in a magnetic palette, because you will get some single eyeshadows like these every now and then. I don’t recall ever trying any Makeup Geek eyeshadows, so I was excited for these three. Shimma Shimma is a gorgeous highlighting eyeshadow with a shimmer that is very fine and not overly sparkly, so it’s great for day wear. Peach Smoothie is a matte light peach that is great if you would like to try the peach trend without going to orange. It is quite smooth and swatches nicely, but it almost disappears on the lid (I am light skinned). This is another great eyeshadow for day wear. Aphrodite unfortunately disappointed me. This is a deep plus brown, that looks mostly brown, but in specific light you can see some purple undertones. It swatches patchy, there was some fallout, and it was really hard to apply and blend.
Value: $18 USD
The three eyeshadows coordinate well together to create a wearable look. Here I applied Shimma Shimma in the inner corner and on brow bone, Peach Smoothie all over and Aphrodite in the outer corner and crease. There are no filters here to show you the true colors.
Crown Trio Brush Set
I couldn’t find these brushes on the Crown website, but they are available at some resale sites. The brushes are white with cream and baby pink synthetic bristles, very soft and dense. I generally use fluffier brushes for applying blush and bronzer, but dense brushes like these are great for blending out any harsh lines. I already own a few similar Crown brushes, and they are quite long-lasting, they wash well and don’t shed. Drying time is a bit longer since they’re so dense. Overall, the quality is quite good.
Value: $29.99 USD
Vasanti Cosmetics Makeup Magnet Wipes
I have a soft spot for Vasanti Cosmetics, and always welcome anything from the brand. These particular wipes are literally soaked in micellar water, making them a bit wetter than the brand I normally use, and I actually preferred these wipes. However, they are also a bit smaller, and I need two to remove all my eye and face makeup. They do the job well, and there isn’t much residue left when I wash my face afterwards (which you are supposed to do after makeup removal, no matter what method you use). Overall, these are good wipes, and the price is ok.
Value: $12 USD
So Susan Cosmetics Haute Light Highlighting Pencil
I am really impressed by this brand. Lately I’ve tried a few of their products, and they were all good, including this pencil. Like most such pencils, I find it to be a bit dry, but unlike concealers it doesn’t need to be set, and it didn’t crease, so I like it for quick makeup application. You can also use it for contouring, as a matte highlighter. I used it on my dark circles in the eyeshadow look photo above, and it did a good job covering and highlighting the area. The only issue I have with it is that I don’t believe this color is really universal. I am light skinned and it works for me, and it would probably work for some medium tones, but not for darker ones. They might want to offer a few more shades in the future.
Value: $19.95 USD
Here are all the makeup products swatched, left to right: So Susan highlighting pencil, Makeup Geek eyeshadows in Aphrodite, Peach Smoothie and Shimma Shimma and the NARS Velvet lip glide in La main bleue.
Tribe Beauty Box Review August 2018 – Final Thoughts
I am really happy with what I received in the August Tribe Beauty Box. They sent out products that coordinate well, and the variety of eye, face and lip products is nice, too. The only product I didn’t like is the Aphrodite eyeshadow, and I am OK with that, because all the other products work for me. Total value of the box is $105.94 USD, which is more than double the cost+shipping. I appreciate that they keep their shipping costs quite low compared to some other boxes.
This box has sold out, and the next box will be the October box, so if you’d like to get it I recommend signing up for their waitlist.
